Custom IML & IMD Molding

IML & IMD Molding Service Types & Capabilities

Smooth seamless surface, cost saving & high efficiency for premium appearance parts

Overview:We provide full IML & IMD molding solutions from design to mass production. Our technology integrates durable graphics into plastic parts, eliminating secondary painting/assembly. Ideal for consumer electronics, home appliances, and automotive interiors.

Difference between IML and IMD

  • IML (In-Mold Labeling): The film remains on the part surface. Suitable for flat and shallow curved surfaces. Simple process and cost-effective, ideal for flat panels and nameplates.
  • IMD (In-Mold Decoration): Only ink transfers onto the plastic while the film stays inside the mold. It supports complex curved and 3D shapes with strong stereoscopic effect, perfect for irregular & large curved decorative parts.

Common Defects & Solutions

Film Wrinkling or Bubbling
  • Cause: Improper film positioning, uneven injection pressure, trapped air, or excessive film stretching.
  • Solution: Optimize gate location to balance flow, use vacuum-assisted film positioning, adjust mold temperature, and refine film pre-forming geometry.
Poor Adhesion (Film Peeling / Ink Transfer Failure)
  • Cause: Insufficient mold temperature, contaminated plastic or film surface, incorrect film material, or incompatible adhesive.
  • Solution: Verify material compatibility (film vs base plastic), increase mold/barrel temperature, ensure parts and film are clean, and adjust adhesive coating properties.
Color Mismatch or Fading
  • Cause: Inconsistent film printing, high molding temperatures affecting ink stability, or poor color management.
  • Solution: Use heat-resistant inks, perform color matching under controlled lighting, keep master film batches for repeat orders, and optimize cooling profiles.
Film Shift / Misalignment
  • Cause: Weak film positioning, uneven flow front, or excessive injection speed.
  • Solution: Add mechanical film holders or vacuum suction, adjust injection speed and pressure profiles, and use high-precision loading jigs.
Scratches or Surface Defects After Molding
  • Cause: Rough mold surface, improper ejection, or insufficient film hardness/top coat.
  • Solution: Polish mold cavities, adjust ejector pin positions, upgrade to scratch-resistant film grades, and add protective hard coats.
Silver Streaks / Gas Marks on Decorated Areas
  • Cause: Moisture in the plastic resin, trapped air, or outgassing from the film during molding.
  • Solution: Pre-dry plastic pellets, increase venting in the mold, reduce injection speed, and use low-outgassing film materials.
Film Breakage During Molding
  • Cause: Excessive stretch on deep-draw areas, insufficient film ductility, or sharp mold corners.
  • Solution: Use more flexible film (e.g., TPU/PC blends), add draft angles and smooth radii to mold features, and optimize film pre-forming.

Production Process

  1. Film Design & Preparation
Custom decorative films (PET/PC/TPU) are printed with patterns, colors, and functional coatings, then precision-cut to match the part geometry.
  2. Mold Loading & Positioning
The prepared film is placed into the mold cavity using automated or manual alignment to ensure accurate placement.
  3. Injection Molding
Molten plastic (ABS, PC/ABS, PC, PMMA, etc.) is injected into the mold. High temperature and pressure bond the film to the plastic surface.
    • IML: The entire printed film remains permanently on the part surface.
    • IMD: Only the ink/coating transfers to the plastic; the base film is peeled away after molding.
  4. Cooling & Demolding
The part cools and solidifies, forming a seamless, integrated decorative surface.
  5. Quality Control & Finishing
Parts undergo inspection for color matching, scratch resistance, and dimensional accuracy, with optional post-processing if required.

Core Advantages of IML & IMD Molding

Durable, scratch-resistant surface

Graphics and textures are embedded into the part, not just printed on top, offering excellent resistance to scratches, fading, and chemicals.

No secondary processes

Eliminates painting, printing, or adhesive assembly, reducing costs and lead times.

Seamless, high-quality appearance

Creates smooth, continuous finishes on complex 3D shapes, impossible with traditional methods.

Design flexibility

Supports custom colors, gradients, textures, and special effects like backlighting, even on curved or irregular parts.

Consistent quality

Color and pattern are fixed during molding, ensuring perfect matching across mass production.

Eco-friendly & cost-efficient

Reduces waste from paint/ink and lowers long-term maintenance costs for finished products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but most can be addressed in the DFM stage.
  • IML works best with flat or shallow-curved surfaces; deep draws or undercuts can cause film stretching.
  • IMD supports complex 3D shapes, but requires a minimum draft angle and smooth transitions to avoid ink transfer issues.

We will conduct a full design review before mold development to ensure manufacturability.
Yes, we often recommend hybrid solutions.
  • Use IML for large, flat panels (cost-effective, fast sampling).
  • Use IMD for curved or 3D parts where seamless decoration is needed.

We can optimize the process mix based on your part geometry and budget.
We use a standardized color management process:
  1. We match colors to your Pantone/RAL code during film printing.
  2. We keep master film rolls on file for repeat orders.
  3. We conduct A/B color checks between the film and molded part, under both D65 and shop lighting conditions.
We perform pre-production validation to minimize this risk:
  • We test film adhesion and scratch resistance on initial samples.
  • We can adjust the film type, coating, or molding parameters (temperature, pressure) to meet your standards.
  • If issues occur during production, we will identify the root cause and provide a corrective action plan at no extra cost for process-related problems.
Large, thin panels are common in appliances and electronics, and require careful process control:
  • We recommend a minimum wall thickness of 1.2–1.5mm to prevent warping.
  • We use balanced gate placement and controlled injection profiles to avoid film wrinkling or shifting.
  • For extra-large parts, we can use high-precision positioning jigs to ensure alignment accuracy.
Yes, we support capacitive IMD integration.
  • Conductive traces and touch circuits can be printed directly onto the decorative film before molding.
  • This eliminates the need for separate membrane switches, reducing part count and assembly steps.
  • We can work with your electronics team to ensure the touch function meets your sensitivity and durability requirements.
Our process is designed for minimal waste:
  • Film is cut to near-net shape before molding to reduce offcuts.
  • Excess film from the IMD process is automatically peeled and collected.
  • We can provide material traceability and waste reduction reports for eco-focused customers.
We enforce strict NDA protocols for all customer designs:
  • Your film patterns, logos, and CAD files are stored on secure, password-protected servers.
  • Only authorized engineers have access to project-specific data.
  • We never reuse or disclose your custom designs to third parties.
